How do I measure Distance and Area in Earth Pro?

There are 2 basic options for measuring distance (and area) in Earth Pro: Ruler Tool or Get Info.

  • Ruler Tool: Select this tool from the toolbar at top of display screen. A pop-up window will give you the option to draw a Line between 2 points, a Path connecting multiple points, or a Polygon. The distance and area of the feature will be displayed in the pop-up window.
  • Get Info: Select an existing Path or Polygon from the “Places” window on the left, then “right-mouse-click” to open a popup menu with a list of options. At the bottom of the list, select “Get Info,” then select Measurements and choose the units for displaying the distance (Miles, Kilometers, etc.)  or area (Square Miles, Square Kilometers, etc.).
  • NOTE: Distances can vary based on “Altitude” settings in the Get Info window (In Google Earth, select Help on the main menu at top of display screen for more detail). The default setting “Clamped to Ground” is recommended.

How do I measure Elevation in Earth Pro?

  • Mouse: The basic method for measuring elevation is to place the mouse pointer over the location of interest and read the elevation that appears in the lower right corner of the display screen (next to the Latitude and Longitude).
  • NOTE: Elevations in Google Earth are based on a DEM grid (approx., 30 m x 30 m in U.S., 90 m x 90 m non-U.S.) and should therefore be used with caution!

How do I view a Cross-Sectional Profile of an IBT Route in Earth Pro?

A cross-sectional profile is a graph of the changes in elevation along a line from start to end. For an IBT route, the graph would show the amount of variability in elevation along the route, and the slope from start to end (i.e., uphill or downhill).

  • Show Elevation Profile: Select the name of the IBT Route from the “Places” window on the left (Example: the IBT route for the Central Arizona Project is named “CAP Route”), then “right-mouse-click” to open a popup menu with a list of options. Near the bottom of the list, select “Show Elevation Profile” to open an inset window showing the cross-sectional profile (see figure below). See Google Earth Blog article for further discussion and comments.
  • TIP: Move the mouse pointer inside the inset window to see the distance and elevation along the profile at any specific point.
  • TIP: Use a standard mouse, joystick or 3D mouse to rotate the view in the main display window so that the IBT route aligns with the profile line in the inset window.
  • NOTE: Elevations and Distances measured in Show Elevation Profile may vary slightly from measurements made by other methods (Ruler Tool, Get Info, etc.).

Multiple pumping plants are used to “lift” the water up the “stair-step” design of the canal system. The route passes through several tunnels along the way.

How-To: Installing Google Earth Pro for desktop on your Chromebook

Google Earth is a great tool for a wide variety of use cases. Whether you’re a teacher taking your students on virtual tours around the world or you simply want to explore the earth from the comfort of your living room, Google Earth’s web and mobile platforms offer powerful features such as Street View, knowledge cards, distance measurements and more. Users can create, import and export projects using Google Drive as well as KML file types. As robust as these versions of Google Earth have become, there are many users that rely heavily on the advanced features that come with Google Earth Pro for Desktop.

In addition to the above features, the desktop version of Google Earth includes a variety of addons like a movie-making mode that gives you the ability to create “fly-by” videos as you navigate around the Earth environment. Other features include GPS and a fun little built-in flight simulator that lets you pilot an F-16 or SR22. Now, thanks to Linux apps, the full Google Earth Pro experience can be had on Chrome OS. While most users can likely get by with the web-based version, some may need the full functionality of the desktop version and installing it on a Linux-enabled Chromebook is a snap.

To install Google Earth Pro on your Chromebook, you will first need to make sure you have a device that supports Linux apps via the Crostini project. You can find a detailed list of supported platforms on the Crostini developer page here. If you are unsure of your Chrome OS device’s code name, you can find that list here. If you’re Chromebook is up to date and it supports Linux apps, you will find Linux(Beta) in the settings menu directly beneath the Apps tab. Next, you will need to enable Linux apps and update the container on your device. You can find these steps in the Command Line article here.

Now you’re ready to install Google Earth Pro. Head over to the Google Earth downloads page and grab the 64-bit .deb file for Linux. Open your Downloads folder from the Files App and double-click the Google Earth .deb file and wait for the installation to finish. Now, you should find the Google Earth app icon in your launcher. The application runs well enough on Chrome OS to use in place of a Windows or macOS device but you may notice the UI being a little finicky here and there. Still, this is a great example of a Linux application that can find some real use on Chrome OS in a variety of venues.

What is Google Earth?

Google Earth is a free program from Google that allows you to "fly" over a virtual globe and view the Earth through high-resolution graphics and satellite images. It is greatly superior to static maps and satellite images. Google Earth gives you a drone's eye view of the world below.

Google Earth is the world's most detailed globe and one of the most frequently downloaded programs in the history of the internet. Within minutes you will be zooming in on your hometown and taking visual excursions to our planet's most visited or most remote places.

The images are detailed enough that in most populated areas you can clearly see your house, objects in your yard, and often recognize your car parked along the street. A digital elevation model within Google Earth allows you to view the landscape of many geographic areas in 3D.

A Free Download

Google Earth is a free downloadable program that you install on your Windows, Mac, or Linux desktop or laptop computer. The program requires very little space on your hard drive because the images are stored on Google's servers and streamed to your computer upon demand.

Google Earth is also available as a browser plug-in and as a mobile app. Google has been offering the program for free and improving it regularly since 2005. It has been downloaded over one billion times.

Recent Images, Updated Regularly

Most of the images in Google Earth were acquired within the past three years, and Google is continuously updating the image set for different parts of the Earth. Large cities generally have more recent and higher resolution images than sparsely inhabited areas.

A misconception exists among some people that the images displayed in the Google Earth program are live-updated directly from satellites. This is not the case. The images are acquired by satellites, processed by commercial image providers or government agencies, and then updated to the Google Earth image database in batches.

However, Google and its image providers do have the ability to rapidly integrate new images into the program. This is sometimes done in emergency situations - such as when an area has been hit by a natural disaster and new images would be of valuable assistance to the recovery and relief efforts.

Easy-to-Navigate

When you launch the Google Earth program on your computer or mobile device it will display an image of the Earth from space. You can easily use the controls to "fly" down and find your location. However, if you are in a hurry, you can simply search for an address or the name of a landmark or the geographic coordinates. Google Earth will quickly "fly" you right to your destination.

security problems with Google Earth?

Seldom-Seen Places: Some people believe that Google Earth provides too much information about important buildings, which might lead to security concerns. Others believe that Google Earth allows close-up views of their property which violate their privacy.

Developed for the CIA?

Google Earth was originally called "Earth Viewer 3D." It was developed by Keyhole, Inc., a company funded by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). The software was developed to be a program for "browsing the earth" - and that is exactly what it does.

Google purchased Keyhole in 2004, and with that acquisition it obtained Earth Viewer 3D, which it improved and distributed free to the public starting in 2005. Get your free copy of Google Earth using the blue button below.
