DxO launches Nik Collection 2 with Raw processing and 40 new presets

New Nik Collection 2 by DxO Offers Unmatched Creative Possibilities and RAW File Compatibility

DxO, one of the most innovative companies in the photography and image editing industry, has announced the release of the Nik Collection 2 by DxO, a major upgrade to the famous plugin suite for Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom Classic, and Elements. After bringing the Nik Collection back to the market with the software’s first stable version with customer support in June 2018, DxO is expanding the plugin suite with over 40 new creative presets and high-resolution monitor support for Windows. In addition, the Nik Collection 2 now comes with DxO PhotoLab 2.3 ESSENTIAL Edition, DxO’s recently released advanced RAW photo editing software.

Choose from more than 40 new “En Vogue” styles to create unique images with a single click.

The Nik Collection 2, which has gained a significant following for its high-quality, creative filters, has added 42 new “En Vogue” presets to its original set of 156: 10 new recipes for Color Efex Pro, 10 new black and white presets to Silver Efex Pro, 12 new HDR presets to HDR Efex Pro, and 10 new tool combinations to Analog Efex Pro.

The latest filters in the Nik Collection 2 will take your photos’ emotional impact to the next level. For example, “Blue Monday,” which is available in Color Efex Pro, combines the fresh look of subtle Varitone coloring, the visual interest of cross processing, and the softness of slightly desaturated effect. “More Silver,” which is available in Silver Efex Pro, pairs the crispness of silver toning with a fine grain, resulting in black and white photographs that feature a level of balanced contrast typically achieved through darkroom techniques. Photographers who would like to add a bit of nostalgia to their images can turn to “Burned Edges,” in Analog Efex Pro to reproduce the burned-edge, vignetting, toning, and framing effects typical of old-fashioned analog cameras.

The “En Vogue” series was created in collaboration with Dan Hughes, a highly respected lecturer of photography at Rochester Institute of Technology and a former instructor with Nik Software. “I was honored to be a part of the expansion of the Nik Collection by DxO,” he said. “The plugin suite has helped promote the art of photography, and the addition of new effects has significantly increased its potential by offering all photographers new creative opportunities.”

Improved high resolution display with Windows

To better meet users’ needs, the Nik Collection 2 now supports high-resolution monitors (HiDPI) with Windows. The graphic elements of the Color Efex Pro, Silver Efex Pro, HDR Efex Pro, and Analog Efex Pro plugin interface have been improved to ensure flawless readability when viewed through high-resolution monitors—just like with the macOS version.

All the potential of RAW files within an optimized workflow

DxO's recent surveys of Nik Collection customers revealed that nearly all users work in RAW. To help them harness the full power of this file format, the Nik Collection 2 by DxO now comes with DxO PhotoLab 2.3 ESSENTIAL Edition, DxO’s advanced and multiple award-winning photo editing software. The software has been adapted to offer users direct access to the plugins from their workspace via a dedicated button and drop-down menu. After the image is edited in DxO PhotoLab 2, it can be quickly converted and sent to one of the Nik Collection plugins, where the photo can be further altered and enhanced with creative effects.

“By offering our advanced photo editing solution along with the Nik Collection 2, we are giving users access to DxO’s powerful and high-quality RAW treatment technology as well as its unparalleled optical corrections, which were developed over fifteen years of measurements and analyses conducted in its laboratory,” said Jean-Marc Alexia, VP Product Strategy and Marketing with DxO. “DxO also offers high-quality de-noising capabilities, smart exposure optimization with DxO Smart Lighting, and U Point local adjustment technology, which is now available for use with RAW images.”

DxO PhotoLab 2.3: support for new cameras

On top of providing access to Nik plugins directly from the software’s workspace, DxO PhotoLab 2 continues to support new equipment. In addition to adding support for Leica M 10-D and M 10-P, Nikon D3500, Panasonic Lumix DC-S1, DC-S1R, LX100 II, Sony A6400, and DSC-RX100 VA, DxO PhotoLab 2.3 can now process files from Canon EOS RP and Olympus OM-D E-M1 X. It has also added more than 500 new optical modules to its library, bringing its total number of camera/lens combinations to 47,500.

To read the full list of all devices supported by DxO PhotoLab 2.3, visit: https://www.dxo.com/en/dxo-photolab/supported-cameras/

Price and availability

The Nik Collection 2 is now available for download on the DxO website (https://shop.dxo.com/en/photo-software/dxo-nikcollection) for $99.99 instead of $149, and $59.99 instead of $79 for the upgrade until June 30, 2019.

The ESSENTIAL and ELITE editions from DxO PhotoLab 2.3 are now available for download on the DxO website (https://shop.dxo.com/en/photo-software/dxo-photolab) for $129 and $199, respectively. DxO PhotoLab 2 users can download this upgrade for free.

Nik Collection

Nik Collection is a great suite of tools to give your photographs a unique touch by applying filters and effects with personality. Six applications offer you different features that together will make your images look practically professional.

This tool consists of an array of plugins you can use from Adobe Photoshop’s filters tab. Nik Collection has eight independent modes among which you can find many different effects.

The first block, Analog Efex Pro, comes with nine filters to give your pictures the look and feel of a classic camera. All you have to do is click on them and they'll be applied to your image, although you can also add 'scratches and dirt', cartoon, and movie filters to make your pictures look properly old school.

Color Efex Pro is the second tool in this pack, offering up to 55 different effects to set control points and highlight the different elements that compose the photo. Dfine lets you adjust the contrast and reduce color noise separately, thus improving the photo quality so you don’t notice the grain.

HDR Efex Pro lets you create HDR photos combining the different features of this effect and modifying the tone, tone compression, and color. This option recovers any lost highlights, reduces shadows, and adjusts tonality to achieve the perfect level of naturalness and balance. With Sharpener Pro you can selectively improve your image's sharpness by applying control points to focus on.

Silver Efex Pro contains a total of 38 black and white or sepia effects that help you achieve a modern or classic look, depending on your needs. Finally, the last option in Nik Collection is Viveza, a feature to adjust brightness, contrast, saturation, shadows, and RGB hues to control the picture’s warmth and get a more intense look.

Is Nik Collection 3 worth it? Keep reading and you’ll soon find out!

What is Nik Collection 3 by DXO?

Nik Collection is the most complete package of creative plugins for digital photo editing. This piece of software offers different tools to correct, enhance, and stylize images in post-processing.

Nik Collection started offering its first photo plugins when the Nik Software company was created back in 1995. The filters became very popular when Google bought them in 2012, and in 2017, the software company DxO acquired them after they left Nik Collection. DxO has been updating the filters up to the last release of Nik Collection 3 by DxO. You can read more about the ups and downs of Nik Collection here.

Originally, Nik Collection worked just as a plug-in for Photoshop, Lightroom, and other Adobe Products. After the purchase by DxO, these plugins were included in the DxO Photolab software and, today, Nik collection 3 by DxO can be used as a standalone version besides the traditional use of Nik Collection as a plugin for Lightroom and Photoshop.

You’ll have to enter the activation code provided in the email and follow a few easy steps.

How to install Nik Collection in Photoshop and Lightroom

If you want to install Nik Collection 3 as a plugin for Photoshop and Lightroom, the installation software will add the plugins into them by default:

Just click “next,” restart your computer, and you’ll be able to start using Nik Collection in Lightroom and Photoshop.

I’ll explain below how to use Nik collection in Photoshop and Lightroom so you know the best way to launch the software and the optimal way to use it.

Nik Collection plugins review

For this Nik Collection review, I’m breaking down the 8 plugins included in the package. You’ll see a brief summary of what each Nik Collection plugin is best for and a graphic example of the Nik Collection before and after effect.

Color Efex Pro

Color Efex Pro is by far the most popular plugin in the Nik Collection suite. This plugin consists of different creative effects that you can apply to your images to achieve a more artistic result.

You can add atmosphere, glow, change the colors, add fog, and apply up to 55 artistic effects to make your images one step ahead of the rest.

Personally, this is my favorite Nik Collection 3 plugin and the one I use the most in my workflow. My recommendation is to apply the effects subtly or your image might look overdone. Applying Color Efex Pro to the right extent, you can get fantastic results in a quick and easy way for your images.

Color Efex Profoto – Nik Collection

Viveza

Viveza by Nik Collection is aimed at adjusting the colors and contrast in your photos.

Using this digital filter, you can selectively change the brightness, contrast, or saturation in a particular area of your image. It’s a very powerful photo editing tool that I particularly like in the editing process of my Milky Way photography, where my goal is to get more vibrancy and contrast in the Milky Way area of my image.

Viveza – Nik Collection

Dfine

Out of all the plugins in this Nik Collection review, Dfine is the only one created for noise-reduction.

How to use Nik Collection for Noise Reduction

Dfine offers automatic and manual adjustments to get rid of noise in your images, so it’s the perfect plugin for when you have to raise your ISO higher than usual. It’s very straightforward and effective, and for some reason, it’s considered some of thebest noise-reduction software on the market.

Dfine – Nik Collection

However, even though it’s an effective plugin, I prefer to use Topaz Denoise AI; it has the best noise reduction technology thanks to the latest updates in AI. You can check it out in our Topaz Denoise review.

Sharpener Pro

Sharpness in photography is extremely important, and the Nik Collection Sharpener Pro plugin can help you get sharper photos in three different ways:

  • Raw pre-sharpener: To sharpen your Raw files. This is especially useful if you decide to use Nik Collection in its standalone version.
  • Selective sharpening: To enhance the important areas of your images like textures in a landscape, eyes in a portrait, or wildlife shots, etc.
  • Output Sharpening: To apply the final sharpening according to the type of display where you want your image to be viewed.

How to fix out of focus images with Nik Collection

Sharpener Pro – Nik Collection

Again, this plugin works fine, but I prefer Topaz Sharpen AI; apart from sharpening, extracting more detail, and fewer artifacts, it’s the best software to fix out-of-focus images. You can see examples in our Sharpen AI review.

HDR Efex Pro

When we talk about HDR, it’s easy to think about those old-style, overedited HDR images that got everybody thousands of likes on Facebook back in 2013.

This Nik Collection plugin is different. HDR Efex Pro helps you get the most out of the dynamic range in your image. You can create this effect on a single image or merge photos taken with different exposures to show the best highlights and shadows with plenty of detail and no digital noise.

HDR Efex Pro – Nik Collection

Silver Efex Pro

If black and white is your thing, this will be your favorite Nik Collection filter.

Using this plugin, you can turn any image into B&W and adjust the brightness, contrast, and general structure of the image. Like most of the other Nik Collection plugins, you can apply the adjustments selectively by using control points.

Silver Efex Pro – Nik Collection

Analog Efex Pro

With Analog Efex Pro, you can create a vintage effect in your images to make them look as if they were shot using an old film camera.

There are different presets, and you can add vignettes, dirt & scratches, and create that special feeling that only comes from film cameras.

Analog Efex Pro – Nik Collection

Perspective Efex

The last plugin in this Nik Collection review and also the newest created by DxO is perspective Efex, a filter that many Nik Collection users have been asking for for years.

Perspective Efex is an advanced tool aimed at correcting perspective deformation and other optical flaws. DxO offers an enormous database of cameras and lenses so you can correct distortions in one click.

Perspective of Nik Collection by DxO how to use it

It also includes more advanced tools for fixing strong deformations, making it the best Nik Collection 3 plugin for architecture shots and other images where the deformation can be distracting for the viewer.

Perspective Efex – Nik Collection

How to use Nik Collection as a Standalone version

You can definitely use Nik Collection as a Standalone version outside of Photoshop and Lightroom.

If you prefer to do basic edits or simply don’t want to break the bank with the monthly Adobe subscription, Nik Collection 3 by DxO is one of the most complete packages to edit your images from start to finish.

To use it, just open the specific filter that you want to use, and from File → Open images, open the image that you want to edit.

Once it’s ready, click OK and you’ll have the file ready and saved with the adjustments.

The interface changes depending on the photographic filter, but most of them include similar functions like a top bar to check the before/after, a zoom, the histogram, etc.

How to use Nik Collection as a Standalone version

You can also change the settings for that specific filter from the “Settings” option in the bottom left corner.

If you decide to use Nik Collection as a standalone version, I recommend following the suggested workflow by DxO:

  1. Use Perspective Efex to correct the perspective deformation
  2. Apply Raw-Sharpener using Sharpener Pro
  3. Reduce the noise with Dfine
  4. Balance the color and light with Viveza
  5. Apply creative styles and enhancements with Color Efex Pro
  6. If necessary, turn your image into B&W with Silver Efex Pro
  7. Apply the final sharpening using Sharpener Pro again

You can also apply other effects like Analog Efex Pro or HDR Efex Pro after reducing the noise in Dfine.

Note: Nik Collection 3 as a standalone version only loads, adjusts, and saves either Jpeg or TIFF files. If you decide to use the Nik Collection for your entire workflow, you should convert your RAW into Jpeg or TIFF (recommended) first. For this, you can use your camera’s free image editor, such as Capture NX-D for Nikon or Capture One Express for Sony.

How to use Nik Collection in Photoshop

If it’s possible, using Nik Collection in Photoshop is the best option to use Nik Collection, combining the best of both pieces of software.

Once you install Nik Collection in Photoshop either with the lifetime license or by downloading the Nik collection for free trial version here, it’s very easy to run it.

To use Nik Collection in Photoshop, there are two options to launch the plugin:

  • From the Filters→ Nik Collection menu, you can select the plugin that you want to use.
  • From the Nik Collection Selective tool → This quick toolbar allows you not only to launch the Nik Collection filter, but also to access shortcuts and presets that you can create to speed up your processing.

One of the best upgrades from the Nik Collection 3 by DxO version is the Nik Collection Selective tool 2, where there are significant improvements in comparison to the old Google’s Nik Collection version.

How to use Nik Collection in Photoshop

From the new selective tool, in some plugins like Color Efex Pro or Dfine2, there is an option to launch your favorite filters, the last filter you used, or your own Nik Collection Presets (called “Recipes”), something that can make your processing significantly faster.

Once Photoshop launches the Nik Collection interface of your selected plugin, you can apply your adjustments and get back to Photoshop by hitting OK once your processing is ready.

In all Nik Collection photoshop plugins, you can change the settings the same way as in the standalone version. Most of them will apply the settings by default in a separate new layer, although you can change this to always apply the adjustments in the current layer.

Remember that, after applying the Nik Collection effects in Photoshop, you can adjust the opacity and create masks over the filters to make the most of the Nik Collection plugin for Photoshop.

How to use Nik Collection in Lightroom

To use Nik Collection 3 by DxO in Lightroom:

  • Right-click on your image.
  • Go to “Edit in”→ Select the Nik Collection Plugin that you want to use.
  • Select one of the three options to edit the image:
      1. “Edit a Copy with the Lightroom adjustments”.This is the default mode to launch Nik Collection in Lightroom.
      1. “Edit a Copy” to change the original Nik Collection settings in a different file.
      1. “Edit Original” to change the original Nik Collection settings in the same file.

Below, in “Copy File Options,” you can select more settings like the file format (Jpeg, TIFF, or PSD), the color space, the bit depth, the resolution, and compression.

I recommend setting the above options by default from the General Lightroom preferences by going to the top Menu → External Editing → Additional external editor. That way, you don’t have to change these settings in every picture you edit using Nik Collection in Lightroom.

Once you launch your Nik Collection plugin in Lightroom, it works the same way as in the standalone version or the Photoshop Plugin.

How to use Nik Collection in Lightroom

One of the most relevant features in the Nik Collection 3 by DxO version is the non-destructive workflow, where you can get back to the file and readjust the effects that you had previously applied. To enable this feature, you have to click the option “Save and edit later (Larger files)” in the bottom right corner. The Nik Collection plugin in Lightroom will remember this once you open the file:

Nik Collection 3 non-destructive workflow

This Nik collection non-destructive option only works with TIFF files. When you want to get back to your edit and change/apply new adjustments, launch the Nik Collection Plugin in Lightroom again, and select either the “Edit a Copy” or “Edit original” options to modify the original Nik Collection adjustments in a new file or the original file.

Google’s Nik Collection vs. DXO Nik collection

Even though both pieces of software look pretty similar, there are some fundamental differences when we compare the Google Nik Collection vs. DxO Nik Collection versions.

Before selling the plugins to DxO, Google had abandoned the development of these plugins, so the latest version of Google Nik Collection is old, outdated, and has more and more bugs as Photoshop and Lightroom release new versions.

Below is a summary of the main differences between Google’s Nik Collection vs. DxO Nik Collection 3:

  • We already mentioned the most important: Google’s Nik Collection is outdated software, which continually crashes with each new Photoshop and Lightroom version. Nik Collection 3 by DxOis optimized for the latest versions of LR and PS.
  • Nik Collection 3 by DxO’sprocessing engine is much faster than Google’s Nik Collection, something that’s evident when using Nik Collection in Adobe Photoshop cc 2020.
  • The reversible workflow is only possible in the latest Nik Collection DxOGoogle’s Nik Collection never included this option.
  • The Nik Collection Selective tool 2included in Nik Collection 3 by DxO is optimized vs. the old Nik Collection Selective tool included in Google’s Nik Collection. In this new version, you can not only launch your favorite filters but also replicate your last edit and directly apply your “Recipes” (Presets).
  • DxO Nik Collection software includesextra plugins that are not available in the Nik Collection by Google version, such as Perspective Efex.
  • Last, but not least, if you find any issue or bug, or need any assistance, Nik Collection 3 by DxO offers customer support, whereas there’s no client support at all in Google’s Nik Collection.

My experience using Nik Collection by DXO – is it worth it?

I’ve been using Nik Collection plugins in my post-processing workflow for years. Like many photographers, I thought it was terrible when I saw the news that Google was abandoning the filters, but instead of changing to other software, I decided to stick with Google’s Nik Collection. despite the fact that there was no customer support and constant computer bugs.

I was happy to see the purchase of Nik Collection by DxO, and even though it has taken some time, they have finally released a major Nik Collection update, which maintains the basic key elements of the software and takes these photographic filters to the next level.

My two favorite features in this version are the Non-destructive workflow and the new Selective tool.

With the reversible workflow, I can get back and re-edit my previous images. This is something that’s crucial in my photography, since I rely on Nik Collection for a big part of my processing, and many of my images are just edited using Lightroom + Nik Collection.

As regards the selective tool, after my experience using the 3 Nik Collection version by DxO, I can tell that it has considerably sped up my processing. I use practically the same filters and presets over and over, so this saves a lot of time at the end of the day.

Bear in mind that you will most likely not use all the filters included in the pack. In my case, I usually apply Color Efex Pro and Viveza, and I would say that for Color Efex Pro alone, Nik Collection 3 is worth it.

To sum it up, if you want to take your images to the next level, I strongly suggest adding Nik Collection to your workflow. These plugins are easy to use and fast, and DxO offers a lifetime license. You can get the latest version of Nik Collection 3 by DxO here or give it a try by downloading the free Nik Collection trial version using this link.

Happy captures!

Nik Collection free download – How to install Nik Collection

You can download the free Nik Collection software by using the trial version on the Nik Collection DxO website. This trial version is available for 30 days, and it allows you to use and test all the Nik Collection 3 plugins.

How to install Nik Collection in Photoshop and Lightroom

If you want to install Nik Collection 3 as a plugin for Photoshop and Lightroom, the installation software will add the plugins into them nik collection 2 review - Free Activators default:

However, even though it’s an effective plugin, I prefer to use Topaz Denoise AI; it has the best nik collection 2 review - Free Activators reduction technology thanks to the latest updates in AI.

When you want to get back to your edit nik collection 2 review - Free Activators change/apply new adjustments, launch the Nik Collection Plugin in Lightroom again, and select either nik collection 2 review - Free Activators “Edit a Copy” or “Edit original” options to modify the original Nik Collection adjustments in a new file or the original file.

I uTorrent 3.5.4 Beta 44488 Full Free - Crack Key For U happy to see the purchase of Nik Collection by DxO, and even though it has taken some time, they have finally released a major Nik Collection update, which maintains the basic key elements of the software and takes these photographic filters to the next level.

DxO Nik Collection 4 review: Viveza and Silver Efex rebooted

Nik Collection 4
$149

Every year around the start of June, French software company DxO releases a new version of Nik Collection, a suite of eight image processing tools that can be used either as standalone apps or plug-ins for third-party software like Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom Classic. And 2021 is no different, with Nik Collection 4 now making its debut.

The Nik Collection first appeared over a decade ago, and some of its component plug-ins can be traced back nik collection 2 review - Free Activators far as late 1999, when the first version of Nik Color Efex was released.

Initially developed by Nik Software and later purchased by Google, the Nik Collection was acquired by DxO in late 2017. Since then, the French software company has been steadily adding new features and some its own algorithms to the Nik Collection toolbox.

Available immediately, Nik Collection 4 is priced at $149 for new customers, with upgrades available to existing customers for $79. You can save some money if you order soon, though – through June 30, 2021, DxO is offering discounted pricing of $99.99 for new customers, and $59.99 for upgrades.

Correcting the color of an overexposed reflector lens nik collection 2 review - Free Activators grouped control points in Viveza 3. The image is split vertically for comparison against the original, unedited image.

What's new and included in Nik Collection 4?

With the introduction of Perspective Efex in the previous release, the Nik Collection has a total of eight plug-ins. Silver Efex Pro 3 and Viveza 3 are both updated with modernized UI's and some new tools; suite-wide, 'U-Point' controls are more versatile (more on this later) and 'Meta presets' in the selective tool allow for multiple plug-ins to run sequentially with one click.

In full, the list of plug-ins is as follows:

  • Analog Efex Pro 2 - replicates the look of images shot using analog film cameras
  • Color Efex Pro 4 - a wide range of color image presets in architecture, film, nature, portrait, travel and wedding categories
  • Dfine 2 - reduces noise levels in high-sensitivity and/or small-sensor images
  • HDR Efex Pro 2 - combines multiple identically-framed images for higher dynamic range, or simulates an HDR look from a single image
  • Sharpener Pro 3 - pre-sharpens raw data and applies secondary sharpening immediately prior to output
  • Silver Efex Pro 3 (updated) - converts images to black and white, with a healthy selection of presets, haze reduction, color filtering, film simulation and more
  • Viveza 3 (updated) - tools for adjusting color, light and tonality, along with a small number of presets
  • Perspective Efex - corrects for lens and perspective-based distortions, and allows for a tilt/shift-like miniature effect plus cropping

Last year's iteration of the suite, Nik Collection 3, debuted a new Perspective Efex tool, improved the Selective Tool menu from which plug-ins can be launched, and added support for non-destructive multipage TIFF editing in Lightroom Classic. This year, it's Silver Efex Pro and Viveza which have received most of the love, with major version increments and a brand-new user interface for both.

DxO has also made it possible for Lightroom Classic users to copy and paste Nik processing settings between images without reopening a plug-in, or to quickly recall the last-used settings if you forgot to save them as a preset and want to tweak them further. And a new Meta Presets function has been added to the Selective Tool which can combine the actions of multiple plug-ins in a single click.

The Nik Collection by DxO Selective Tool serves as a launcher for all of the individual plug-ins in the suite. The Meta-presets section is a new addition which allows multiple plug-ins to run sequentially with a single click.

A modern UI for some tools, but others still feel dated

The most obvious change from Nik Collection 3 is in the Silver Efex Pro 3 and Viveza 3 plug-ins, both of which sport an updated UI. The change is significant for both apps, as neither had been visually tweaked in more than a decade, but it's most noticeable for Viveza, which until now couldn't even be resized to fit your screen.

The Viveza and Silver Efex Pro plug-ins both sport shiny new, modernized user interfaces. The new Silver Efex Pro 3 and the prior version 2 can compared above.

Unfortunately, while these two plug-ins now look much better, some others still feel very dated, and there are inconsistencies even among the more recently-updated plug-ins. Dfine 2 and Sharpener Pro 3 still have a geriatric, non-resizable UI like that just replaced in Viveza 3, while Perspective Efex's various sliders, buttons and controls seem to have been lifted straight from DxO ViewPoint 3, and don't visually match any of the other plug-ins in the suite.

The Nik Collection's tools come in several vintages with radically differing interfaces. The Dfine 2 (shown above) and Sharpener Pro 3 plug-ins have the oldest UI, and can't even be resized to fit your screen.

Analog Efex Pro 2, Color Efex Pro 4 and HDR Efex Pro 2, meanwhile, sit somewhere between the rest, with a resizable UI but a noticeably different aesthetic to Silver Efex Pro, Viveza and especially Perspective Efex. As a result the overall suite feels less coherent than it should be, and is something we'd like to see DxO address.

U-Point gives more control with less clutter

DxO has also updated the popular U-Point technology underlying both Silver Efex Pro and Viveza, simultaneously making it more powerful and easily-targeted, and yet also less visually cluttered.

Previously, U-Point's array of control sliders appeared adjacent to the control point over your image when it was selected. Now, almost all of them are instead located in the right-hand adjustment panel, and only the control point area is adjusted directly on the image itself. (You can either drag a slider or the outer periphery of the selection circle.)

Selecting the sky with three U-Point control points. Note that the control points have been grouped together, the group renamed, and that all but one of the control point's sliders now sit in the right-hand control panel rather than atop the image as in older Nik Collection versions.

You can now also tune the luminance and chrominance values for each control point, making it easier to adjust its coverage area appropriately, and likely reducing the number of control points you'll need to use in the first place. Alternatively, you can zero out both of these new sliders, and get a graduated radial filter around a given control point, instead.

If you find yourself needing to use a significant number of control points, you can now individually rename them so they're easier to keep tabs on. You can also still group them, just as in the past. And helpfully, the control points and their locations can now be saved in your presets.

Even more new features for Silver Efex and Viveza

As well as their overhauled UI and U-Point tech, Silver Efex and Viveza have both received some other new features. For Viveza, there are ten new preset looks to choose from, and you can also save and share your own presets. And Silver Efex now boasts both the haze-busting ClearView slider from DxO PhotoLab, as well as the ability to add one of 39 B&W film grain types from DxO FilmPack.

Better integration with Lightroom Classic

DxO has also improved Nik Collection 4's integration with Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Classic. You can now access a new Copy and Apply Parameters dialog as an export preset, and from there you can copy and paste settings for each plug-in between images without needing to reopen the plug-in itself.

And for the Dfine, Viveza, Silver Efex and Sharpener plug-ins, you can also recall the last edits made after reopening the plug-in, making it simple to recover your settings if you want to further adjust them or save them as a preset.

Nik Collection now better integrates with Lightroom Classic, allowing you to copy settings between images and quickly restore your last-used settings.

Meta-Presets combine plug-ins, but with limitations

Speaking of presets, there's one more change of note in this regard, and it can be found in the floating Selective Tool panel from which the individual plug-ins can be launched. As well as the eight existing plug-ins, it now includes an additional option: Meta-presets.

As the name would suggest, these are presets which combine the results from multiple plug-ins in one click, making them extremely quick and easy to apply. The downside is that other than a brief text description which comes up if you click the question mark icon next to the Meta-preset name, you have no way to preview results of the preset. Nor can you alter it, nik collection 2 review - Free Activators make your own presets to match your workflow.

Preview performance remains a weak spot

In most other respects, Nik Collection 4 is similar to the previous version. The Analog Efex, Color Efex, HDR Efex and Perspective Efex plug-ins are all functionally identical to their predecessors.

And that's true of performance, too. Like its predecessor, Nik Collection 4's previews tend to lag behind your adjustments by a good second or so. We'd like to see DxO work on that in a future release, as not only does greater performance mean less time spent editing, it also helps to make it easier and more intuitive to fine-tune the adjustments you're making.

Final thoughts

What we likeWhat we don't
  • Updated UI in Silver Efex and Viveza bring them to a modern standard
  • Incredibly wide range of possible adjustments and tons of presets
  • Improved Lightroom integration is always nice to see
  • Inconsistent user interface among the separate plug-ins
  • Not the most responsive experience
  • No option to purchase individual plug-ins

The Nik Collection has long been a fan favorite that can deliver impressive results, and not just in the hands of experienced photographers, but thanks to a wide selection of presets, less experienced ones as well. It still suffers from a fairly inconsistent UI that varies widely from app to app, but the individual apps themselves are reasonably intuitive to use, if perhaps not quite as fast as we'd like.

That said, it's encouraging to be getting regular yearly updates from DxO, and we're hopeful that further UI and performance enhancements are on the way.

HDR Efex Pro lets you create HDR photos nik collection 2 review - Free Activators the different features of this effect and modifying the tone, tone compression, and color.

2.0 out of 5 starsThe Good and The Bad

If you are like me, you were probably drawn to color Efex Pro and Silver Efex Pro - and decided to bite the bullet and buy the entire package for pretty much the same price as the two programs. But having owned the package for nearly 2 years (and Nik programs for longer than that), I am becoming increasingly frustrated with the product and with Nik's customer service. Honestly, this is a program that is much better in theory than in use. Mostly because it is a huge time sink and far too laborious to have to use each part of each program, opening and closing them separately, just to get an image processed.

I've written separate reviews of Color Efex Pro and Silver Efex Pro - check those to get an idea of what I think of the those programs' features. The good news is that, though very buggy in their early incarnations, are now more robust and stable. They do provide useful and pleasing effects, and unlike many plugins or presets, do a professional job in enhancing your images. I think that's why many people (especially those who don't know PS or LR well) really like the programs. I don't use Viveza or Sharpen at all. Define works well about 50-50 for me and was happy when LR3 came out with top notch noise removal.

And therein lies the problem: this is a program that was created in the era of Photoshop but is now fastly becoming redundant with the advent of Lightroom. Noise and sharpening in LR is not only superior and faster - but it is also non destructive and gives better masking. What takes a good 20 minutes to do a very basic and simple workflow in the Nik suite - only takes 1-2 minutes in Lightroom. Nik software was fine several years ago, in the days when you had to spend a lot of time in Photoshop anyway, so you might as well use a plugin to make your images pretty. But especially in the last two years, workflow time can go nik collection 2 review - Free Activators 6-7 hours to under an hour by using Lightroom controls only (even using Nik for LR is time consuming). And so my Nik products, despite my paying a premium for them (ouch), don't get used much except for an occasional 'special treatment' image. Even B&Ws, for me, are coming out looking much better in LR thanks to the ability to manipulate 8 channels in LR (though I love the 'Structure' feature in SilverEfex Pro, it's not worth the extra 10 minutes or more per picture to use it and LR's clarity brush does nearly the same job).

What Nik's programs do are good (with the exception of Define, which is only 50-50 useful for me when I used it before LR 3). But they are also incredibly expensive. When you get a suite of 5 programs, you pay a large upgrade fee for EACH PROGRAM - making the cumulative upgrades cost more than the full price of the suite - which is insane. It's like a Ponzi scheme - you'll end up paying nearly 2-3x the original purchase price of the program in just a couple of years in order to upgrade and stay current. That, more than any other reason, is why you don't want to buy the suite. I've stopped upgrading as a result - I just don't feel Nik respects its customers at all.

Which leads to my final thoughts: over the years I've had to deal with their customer service several times. And they've been very rude or unresponsive each time. An example was a recent request for the 'special' upgrade price on SilverEfex 2 that their website wouldn't give me in the cart (the cart would only give me the full 'non upgrade' version and not the clearly advertised upgrade price). I had to email 3 times (and I was purchasing their products, you'd think they'd want my money), and on the third time they gave me a discount code and a note written very rudely that they were doing me a huge favor with the discount code. The irony? The code still didn't give me the full upgrade price discount and so I would have had to pay full nearly the full new price and not the upgrade special ($40 extra with their 'discount code') for suite owners.

So in all, with Lightroom getting better and better, I've come to realize that for me, it was better to spend my money learning how to use LR wisely ($30 at Lynda.com is a STEAL!) rather than continuing to purchase Nik products. I've shaved hours and hours off my workflow and can actually enjoy time with my family again. Nor have I used Viveza or sharpening - it's far too time consuming to bring up each program and spend an hour on just one image (and if you do spend that much time on an image, it should be from you knowing Photoshop and layers to bring out an image's best points anyway).

  1. I installed windows 10 from a USB drive created with windows media creations tool from a laptop we had laying around for my new 3900X rig and it showed as activated when I went to put in a key through settings. Still showing activated today. Receiving updates and all never had an issue. I kept that USB drive as it was just in case the media creations tool screwed something up that allowed this to happen.
